Ronald J. Naasko

Veterans For Peace Linus Pauling Chapter, Corvallis lost one its members, Ron Naasko, to a heart attack on September 15, 2011. He was 64.

This is not an obituary, but a brief remembrance of Ron with some helpful links for those who would like to explore his life a bit more. Ron was not very active in our chapter activities. We sensed, by his few words and other deeds, that he preferred to be active in veterans affairs and other issues. Perhaps he found our form of peace activism a bit strident for his calm and reserved manner. We believe Ron quietly supported our root mission and offered, for instance, to help staff our "Peace Booth" at the County Fair. We should have had a more complete discussion of where our motivations overlapped. But sadly, like so many other things, that matter will remain unresolved.

We do know and are so grateful that Ron was one of the most vehement activists for preserving the honor and memory of fallen comrades in arms. His letters to the editor around Memorial Day are testament to that. Ron also worked very hard in Access Benton County for proper access to public places for people with physical disabilities. Having experienced a lifetime of physical impediments to everyday life, Ron was the go-to guy for resolution of access issues and certainly made life more enjoyable for community residents and visitors with physical limitations.

One of our fondest memories of Ron was witnessing the interchange between the two men, when in 2004 Ron met his hero, Max Cleland, a fellow Viet Nam war amputee. The story was well covered here. A photo we took is here. A more complete list of letters and articles from and about Ron can be found at the Corvallis Gazette-Times via this search.

In the tradition of Veterans for Peace, we solemnly say "Ron Naasko...Presente!"

Failure to Obey a Lawful Order

by Leah Bolger (Common Dreams, Dec. 29, 2010)

Imgine you are taking a walk in a park and you witness a mugging. What would you do? Would you look the other way or would you try to stop it? If you are one who would try to stop it, then what would you do when it is your government that is committing the crime? As citizens we are told that we should call our Congressman or write a letter to the editor when we are dissatisfied with our government. But writing a letter to the editor is no more effective at stopping the crimes of our government than it is at stopping a mugging.

On December 16th, 2010, I participated in an act of civil resistance in an attempt to stop my government from continuing to commit crimes—namely the ongoing wars of aggression in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Continue reading here

VFP Leads "Take a Stand For Peace!" Protest at White House
131 Arrested

On a cold, snowy day in Washington, Veterans For Peace led the "Take a Stand For Peace" action, joining several hundred protesters at Lafayette Park for a brief rally and march to the White House, where over 100 protesters attached themselves to the fence in protest of the ongoing wars and occupations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen.

131 were arrested after refusing Park Police orders to disperse. Many of those arrested refused to pay the imposed fine, but will take the case to trial. Joining VFP National Board of Directors and rank and file VFP members were Daniel Ellsberg (of Pentagon Papers fame), Pulitzer Prize winning correspondent Chris Hedges, former CIA analyst Ray McGovern, and author David Swanson. Other groups involved in the action included March Forward!, Code Pink, World Can't Wait and the ANSWER Coalition.

The protest occurred just as President Obama was giving a press conference on the progress of the war in Afghanistan. This would seem to have offered the media compelling linkage to the protest, but except for many independent outlets, the protest was largely ignored by mainstream media.

The stopthesewars.org site contains many excellent reports, videos and photos of the protest. The articles by Chris Hedges and Ray McGovern are particularly insightful.

The best news report is from The Real News (therealnews.com). It's about 6 1/2 minutes, contains excellent interviews with participant,s and can be viewed here.

New Truth in Recruiting Resource

If you're involved (or interested in getting involved) in our Truth in Military Recruiting program and want to learn how to be more effective, read on...

In a recent poll of VFP 132 members, Truth in Recruiting came out the clear favorite as the program we should emphasize most.

The National Network Opposing the Militarization of Youth (NNOMY) has completely redesigned its web site http://www.nnomy.org. It now has broader content, more resources to aid organizers, and information to answer basic questions that arise among young people, parents, teachers and community activists.

Another great resource is the web site of our fellow Oregon VFP Chapter 156 in Rogue Valley. See their good work here.

Wikileaks Posts U.S. Apache Helo Attack on
Unarmed Iraqi Civilians and Journalists

[Warning: The video below contains graphic violence.]

Leah Bolger of Chapter 132 sent this letter to the editor of the G-T regarding the video.

Josh Stieber, who visited our chapter in October 2009 as part of the "Contagious Love Experiment," was a member of the same unit that conducted this attack. He put out a press release on April 9, 2010 condemning the attack, saying this behavior is not out of the ordinary.

What other atrocities are being kept from us by the military leadership?

Corvallis Marks Seven Years in Iraq

March 19, 2010 was the 7th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. This was a war of empire and choice and has thus far led to 4386 U.S. Military deaths, 31716 U.S. wounded and many hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilian casualties.

Members of the Corvallis peace community came together on March 19th for a special vigil and protest beginning at the Benton County Courthouse at 4pm. Some members spread out from there to hold signs and banners at several intersections. VFP 132's Bart Bolger asked several participants what the date meant to them, i.e., what motivated them to attend the protest. He submitted this video to the Peace, Justice and Environmental Project and produced his own video for YouTube. The six-minute PJEP video is here. See our VFP 132 Photo Gallery for some still photos of the event.

Afghanistan War: The Soviet Lesson Not Learned

This short (~6.5 min) video from Brave New Foundation draws many lessons and analogies from the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Worth watching. Lots of talking points for those still convinced this is the "good war."

VFP 132 Helps Corvallis "Rethink Afghanistan"

On October 7th, 2009 the US and NATO militaries entered their 9th year of occupying Afghanistan. Since the first day of the invasion, October 7, 2001, members of the Corvallis peace community have stood vigil every night from 5-6pm in front of the Benton County Courthouse to heighten public awareness of the cost of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Unfortunately that vigil continues to this day and all are welcome to attend.

This year the community hosted a special vigil marking the anniversary. Attendees filled out hand-written postcards to President Obama, asking for an end to US militarism in Afghanistan. Pictures of the vigil are in our photo gallery. A short video of the vigil is posted here.

Following the vigil, VFP 132 hosted a screening of the film,"Rethink Afghanistan." Thanks to Joe Magner for his expert sight & sound setup. The one-hour documentary was very informative and moving. For more information on the film see: http://rethinkafghanistan.com/, where you can view individual segments and order the DVD.

On October 8, 2009, the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) sent President Obama an excellent letter detailing a new strategy for Afghanistan. Read it here.

Local veteran's suicide reflects troubling trend

(Source: Hal Bernton, Seattle Times, July 5, 2010)

"Orrin Gorman McClellan is among the war casualties that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has just begun to track—young men and women who served in the post-9/11 military, and killed themselves after struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder and other war wounds... During nine years of war, suicide rates among active-duty soldiers, once far below the civilian population, have been on the rise. From January through June 10 of this year [2010], 115 soldiers had taken their lives. The even higher rate of veterans taking their own lives after leaving the military also has raised major concerns." For the full story, click here.

The 'Long War' quagmire

The doctrine, which posits an 80-year or so war against insurgents in the Middle East to South Asia, needs more scrutiny.

By Tom Hayden

March 28, 2010, LA Times Opinion Page

"Without public debate and without congressional hearings, a segment of the Pentagon and fellow travelers have embraced a doctrine known as the Long War, which projects an "arc of instability" caused by insurgent groups from Europe to South Asia that will last between 50 and 80 years. According to one of its architects, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan are just "small wars in the midst of a big one."

Consider the audacity of such an idea. An 80-year undeclared war would entangle 20 future presidential terms stretching far into the future of voters not yet born."

STOP THESE WARS

Take a Stand For Peace

On December 16th, 2010, in Washington, DC, Veterans For Peace will lead the largest ever U.S. veterans-led civil resistance to war. Joining the march and civil resistance will be Daniel Ellsberg, Pentagon Papers; Mike Ferner, Veterans For Peace National President; Leah Bolger, Veterans For Peace Vice-President and retired Navy Commander; Mike Prysner, Iraq vet and co-founder of March Forward!; Ray McGovern, retired CIA official; Medea Benjamin, Code Pink; and many more. Many will risk arrest while demanding an end to the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen.

Why risk arrest?

"I have no illusion that getting arrested in this demonstration will change all that I decry, but it doesn't have to. Acts of civil resistance are not symbolic. They are proof that conscience still must be acted on. They are part of a strategy for peace and justice whose only success may be to inspire the next action. They are a step in the process of defiant resistance, a process that is, and always has been, the only safeguard of our real values."...Robert Shetterly, Common Dreams, 12/14/10. "Why I Choose to Risk Arrest December 16, 2010."

November 11th is ARMISTICE DAY

Armistice Day (also known as Remembrance Day) is on November 11 and commemorates the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front, which took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning—the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918.

In the US, President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed November 11 Armistice Day in 1919 saying, "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with lots of pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations."

In May 1938, the 11th of November in each year became a legal holiday; "a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day'."

It did not become known in the US as Veterans Day until 1954. Most other countries which recognize the date refer to it as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day.

Today it seems fitting, after overreaching with our military might for many years, to emphasize the original intent of the holiday and remember when the guns of World War I went silent and peace settled over Europe once more.

For another look at Armistice Day and a list of VFP events for the holiday, see the VFP national website, www.veteransforpeace.org.

Ken O'Keefe in Corvallis

Former US Marine, marine conservationist, and human rights activist, Ken O'Keefe, spoke at the Odd Fellows Hall on September 22, 2010. The event was co-hosted by VFP 132, the Linn-Benton Green Party, and the Palestine Action Group.

Ken was on board the Mavi Marmara, destined for Gaza as part of the Freedom Flotilla, which was attacked by Israeli commandos in international waters on May 31, 2010. The attack left nine civilians, including a Turkish-American, dead and many more badly injured. The UN Human Rights Council recently completed an investigation of the attack and has accused Israel of human rights and international law violations.

US Social Forum—VFP In the Spotlight

Numerous members of Veterans for Peace from across the country attended the US Social Forum in Detroit, Michigan, June 22-26, 2010, including our own Leah Bolger, national vice president and board member.

The Social Forum addressed, through seminars, workshops and discussion panels, critical social problems related to the economy, the environment and peace. For more on the Forum click here.

During the event, VFP kicked off a campaign entitled, "How is the War Economy Working for You?" VFP members dropped a banner from a vacant housing project building, highlighting the impact of the war economy on especially hard-hit Detroit. For a short press conference video covering the banner drop, click here.

Leah also participated in a panel discussion at the Forum entitled, "War Powers: Who Decides?" She was joined on the panel by Daybreak author, David Swanson, Kevin Zeese, and George Martin. Videos of the panel are here.

"No Soy El Army" Tour comes to Oregon

VFP 132 is co-sponsoring the Tour's visit to Corvallis on Sunday, August 29, 5-8pm, First United Methodist Church, 1165 NW Monroe. This is an important companion piece to our ongoing "truth in military recruiting" program. The event is free, open to the public and includes dinner.

Latino Veterans present about the multiple wars affecting our families and our towns: the wars abroad that they fought in, the wars on immigrants where they are targets & the war on the poor to cut needed services.

The No Soy El Army Tour brings Latino veterans and youth activists to talk with community members about the connections between the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the war on immigrants here in the US. This tour is the first Spanish-language tour in Oregon that will focus on the experiences of Latino veterans and share specific alternatives to military enlistment and opportunities for Latino youth after high school.

The War Must Be Ended Now

(This is an open letter to the President from many peace & justice organizations, including Veterans For Peace. Click on the link below for the full letter and list of signatories.)

President Barack Obama, The White House Washington, D.C.

November 30, 2009

Dear President Obama,

With millions of U.S. people feeling the fear and desperation of no longer having a home; with millions feeling the terror and loss of dignity that comes with unemployment; with millions of our children slipping further into poverty and hunger, your decision to deploy thousands more troops and throw hundreds of billions more dollars into prolonging the profoundly tragic war in Afghanistan strikes us as utter folly. We believe this decision represents a war against ordinary people, both here in the United States and in Afghanistan. The war in Afghanistan, if continued, will result in the deaths of hundreds if not thousands of U.S. troops, and untold thousands of Afghans....(Read the full letter here.)

Revitalizing the Antiwar Movement

December 7, 2009, Truthout Op-Ed by our brother (VFP Long Island Chapter), Camillo "Mac" Bica.

Mac's bio appears at the end of the full article.

[Ed. note: This is a very thoughtful, big-picture piece; written partly in response to the President's announcement of the Afghan war surge. We would welcome feedback for discussion at our next VFP meeting. Use the "contact us" link above or email us directly.]

Excerpt: "[Following President Obama's announcement] many peace-minded people are looking again to an anti-war movement and finding it somewhat in disarray, perhaps an understatement. If it is truly our intent to revitalize the anti-war movement, we must begin a dialogue to redefine our goals and to re-evaluate and clarify our tactics and strategy. That is, we must become more focused on ending American militarism and imperialism, war and occupation, and we must build a coalition of voices by practicing tolerance and understanding for a diversity of views and opinions." AP Documents Corvallis Peace Vigil

AP Photo - Rick Bowmer, Nov. 12, 2009.

QUOTE

Every afternoon, seven days a week, Ed Epley has a 5 p.m. appointment with the war.

He pulls a protest sign from his maroon 1961 Volkswagen van — he has 30 to 40 stashed inside — and joins a one-hour peace vigil at the Benton County courthouse in Corvallis, Ore. Epley has been doing this, day in and day out, since the U.S. launched its first air strikes on Afghanistan on Oct. 7, 2001.

"I really don't look at it as a job, it's just part of the daily task of being a citizen," says the 73-year-old retiree.

More than eight years later, this small, 365-day-a-year vigil may seem quixotic. But it stands apart for another reason: It has kept a steadfast focus on the war. Even though hundreds of thousands of troops have served, even though more than 800 members of the military have died, the marathon war in Afghanistan has, for long stretches, been off the nation's radar...

Meanwhile, Ed Epley is in year nine in the vigil at the county courthouse in Corvallis.

He's among 8 to 12 regulars who gather from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. — weekends and holidays included.

Mike Beilstein, a city council member, still comes by a few times a month. He helped launch the vigil in 2001 when he brought a "Peace on Earth" sign to the courthouse the day after the first air strikes on Afghanistan.

"We never feel we're wrong, but we've asked ourselves is this the best way to address the issue," Beilstein says. "Would I be more effective going home writing letters? That question has been there from the start and it's there now, but now that we've been doing it, how do we quit?"

Most days, about 10 people or fewer show up. On the October anniversary of the war, about 50 did. When big announcements are made — including events tied to the Iraq, which also is part of the protest — the numbers swell.

They've endured shouts of "nuke them," ''go back to Russia," ''dirty hippies, get a job." Motorists have pelted them with cans and food.

They've also been greeted with peace signs, honks of support and letters from as far as New Zealand and Tunisia. (Al-Jazeera taped a segment on the vigil.)

"The message does get out," Epley says. "It's really hard to tell how much effect we're having. People will stop by and write letters and say they do appreciate we're out there. That's what keeps us going. ... I think most of us realize we're never really going to win world peace."

As for the future?

"I don't know what the signal is going to be to say, 'Let's call it quits,'" he says. "We never thought we'd be here this long."

First Annual Corvallis Peace Fair

On September 19, 2009 VFP 132 helped host the First Annual Corvallis Peace Fair in recognition of the UN-sanctioned International Day of Peace. The purpose of the Fair was to participate in a global holiday, raise awareness about the International Day of Peace, build community, create a positive and welcoming event for foreign-born residents, and build on relationships with Corvallis Sister Cities.

Activities included: Children's Activities, Crafts, Art Projects, Music, Games, Dancing, Speakers, Parade, Video messages and cards for Sister Cities, Gondar, Ethiopia and Uzhhorod, Ukraine. Although threatening rain early, the weather cooperated nicely and the event was a smashing success. For photos of the event, please see our photo gallery.

Fear was no excuse to condone torture

9-11-09: Retired USMC Commandant, Gen. Krulak, and retired CENTCOM Commander, Gen. Hoar, in a letter to the editor criticized Dick Cheney’s recent public statements in support of torture as a means of interrogation.

Here are some excerpts:

“What leaders say matters. So when it comes to light, as it did recently, that U.S. interrogators staged mock executions and held a whirling electric drill close to the body of a naked, hooded detainee, and the former vice president winks and nods, it matters.” and

“Moral equivocation about abuse at the top of the chain of command travels through the ranks at warp speed.”

Recruiter misled students, a Navy investigation finds
(Honolulu Star-Bulletin, 8/31/09)

“A military recruiter accused of using false promises to lure two Kapolei students into enlisting in the Navy has been pulled off recruiting and given shipboard duty after a Navy investigation concluded he had misled the boys.

Partly in response to that case, Hawaii's public schools will no longer give student contact information and test scores on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery to recruiters unless students go to a recruiting station off campus and sign a form expressly requesting the information be given.” Read the rest of the story here.

Peace Booth "Fairs" Well

It was a sizzler at the 2009 Benton County (OR) Fair, July 29 – August 1, with temperatures topping the century mark the first day. But turnout was still good and many fair-goers visited the Peace Booth, sponsored by VFP 132, the UU Peace Action Council, and Alternatives to War. Booth volunteers offered handouts on peace and justice initiatives, especially ‘truth in military recruiting’ programs. Chapter 132 President, Bob Stebbins, contributed a banner illustrating the dollar cost of U.S. wars of aggression -- $1 trillion in national debt (yes, 12 zeroes); and the $650 billion annual defense budget. But perhaps the most popular attraction was the coloring table where young (and some not-so-young) peace enthusiasts colored peace signs. A mosaic of their work is shown here. For a larger view, click here. We’d like to thank all 22 volunteers who enthusiastically staffed the booth despite the heat….BRAVO ZULU (that’s Navy for “Job Well Done”).

Letter from VFP to President Obama - Afghanistan

May 12, 2009

Dear President Obama,

Action Alert: Do Something about Homelessness in Corvallis

Many of those in our chapter have staffed the winter homeless shelter and driven the Dial-a-Bus. But the shelter is closed on March 15 and there is plenty of foul weather ahead. Where will these guys go?

The Corvallis City Council may agree to take up the issue and consider designating a legal camping area. Church groups have offered to provide sanitation and water. But this will only happen if the Council hears from you in support of this plan and time is running out.

Please call and email your city councilor and Mayor Tomlinson today. Go to the City web site to find the contact info for your ward councilor. If you’re not sure which ward you are in, check the map here. If you live outside city limits, email the Mayor and the Benton County Commissioners.

Returning Veterans Project

Their mission: “Returning Veterans Project is a nonprofit organization comprised of politically unaffiliated and independent health care practitioners who offer free and confidential services to veterans and their families of past and current Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns. Our volunteers include mental health professionals, acupuncturists, naturopaths, chiropractors, physicians, massage therapists, and other complementary health care providers. We believe it is our collective responsibility to offer support and healing for the short and long-term repercussions of war zone service on veterans and their families.” Read more at their web site.

And there’s a good article on the Oregon program by Tom Mann, the editor of ODVA VetsNews, in the Jan/Feb 2009 issue. It’s a 2.54 Mb pdf download (and if you get a warning window, yes, it’s safe to download). See page 4 for the article.

Chapter 132 Conducts another Successful Freeway Blog
“Keep Our Guard Home”

In support of the “Keep the Guard Home” Campaign, several of our members did a 2-hour Interstate-5 freeway blog on Feb. 27 at the overpass just south of Albany, Oregon. The response from drivers was overwhelmingly positive, about 20 to 1 in favor. Many of the truckers sounded their air horns and we had many “two thumbs up.” For more photos (all taken by Todd & Esmeralda Allen), see the photo gallery link in the upper right corner of this page. States Push to Take Back National Guard

by Maya Schenwar, t r u t h o u t | 02.11

"Going on its seventh year, the Iraq war has taken its toll on not only the US military, but also on the states's National Guard units, which were called up when Congress passed the 2002 Authorization to Use Military Force (AUMF) against Iraq. Now a growing state-level movement is working to keep the Guard at home. Its logic: The AUMF's goals have been fulfilled. The authorization's explicit purposes were to defend the US against the 'threat posed by Iraq' and to enforce UN Security Council resolutions regarding Iraq's alleged ballistic missiles and weapons of mass destruction. Saddam Hussein - along with his supposed threat - is gone, and the UN resolutions are no longer relevant, so there's no longer a mandate to keep troops in Iraq."

VFP 132 Participates in March 15th Salem Rally and March 19th Procession & Die-In

On March 15, several members of VFP 132 joined hundreds of Oregon peace and justice activists from over 50 groups, including all four Oregon chapters of Veteran for Peace, at a rally and march entitled: “Stop the Wars at Home and Abroad.” Speakers included Benji Lewis of our chapter and IVAW Oregon.

On March 19, our chapter participated a commemoration in Corvallis of the 6th year of war and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. About 50 marchers were lead by a solo drummer on a solemn procession to the OSU campus where they conducted a “die-in” to recognize loss of life in these conflicts.

"WITHDRAWAL"

VFP National Press Release of 2-27-09

A national veterans' organization today objected to calling President Obama's announcement on Iraq a "withdrawal," adding that keeping troops there and Afghanistan will "put the nail in the coffin of America's economy." Veterans For Peace, referring to several published reports that the Obama plan will leave 50,000 or more troops in Iraq, and pointing to the buildup already underway in Afghanistan, warned ….” Read more here.
